In the short time it takes you to read this opening paragraph, it is a sad fact that somebody somewhere is suffering a heart attack.
 
We all know someone whose life is afflicted by heart disease - it may be a family member, a friend, a work colleague or a neighbour.  It may even be yourself.
 
Despite medical advances and technological breakthroughs, coronary disease remains the biggest killer of people in our community. For more than a decade, the Heartbeat Appeal has been one of Yorkshire's leading independent charities fighting heart disease.
 
Thanks to the generosity of our local community, we have raised more than £2m - through purely voluntary endeavours - to enhance the care, treatment and rehabilitation of heart patients.
 
We have supported hospitals across the Yorkshire region, including those in Leeds, Bradford, York, Harrogate, and Wakefield, by buying the latest generation of cardiac equipment to ensure they remain at the forefront of patient care.
 
We have also taken great pride in our funding of a hi-tech cardiac training suite at the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, which will teach the doctors of tomorrow the latest clinical techniques in the treatment of heart disease.
 
We are determined to build on this important work in the future.  With your help and support, we can work together in making a real difference to people's lives, here in our Yorkshire heartland..
